Submissions for "Karma" by Troy Dodd

Some more old art found while cleaning a hard drive...

A couple of years ago, I had the chance to submit some artwork for a comic book called Karma written by Troy Dodd. My work didn't make the cut, but I think these are decent examples of sequential art and they were really fun to do.

Come Holy Ghost

This image is meant to represent the active, abiding aspect of God as expressed through the imagery of multiple traditions. There is a lot going on in this picture, which for the time being I invite the viewer to discover for themselves.

An old image I found while copying files off an old hard drive. I think it did this one mostly in MS Paint, but I feel like it holds up well.

Hanuman

The Hindu god Hanuman represents love and service for God. He features prominently in the Ramayana as the loving friend and ally of Rama and his consort Sita - the incarnations of the masculine (Vishnu) and feminine (Lakshmi) aspects of God which sustain the Universe. The story goes that Hanuman's love was so strong, that when he was mockingly told that his love could not be as deep as he claimed, he opened his chest to show Rama and Sita enshrined there.

The Way of a Pilgrim

"The Way of a Pilgrim is a classic text of Russian Orthodox Christian spirituality. In it, an itinerant pilgrim wanders the Russian countryside seeking the experience of inner prayer "without ceasing," which h finds in the recitation of the Jesus Prayer. He repeats the simple prayer, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me," until it comes to permeate his entire existence.

Peace Be Upon Him

This is a culturally respectful image of the Prophet Muhammad, his face obscured by radiance. The Arabic is from the hadith (sayings of and stories about the Prophet), and roughly translated it states that since all things are dependent on God, the most beloved of God is the one who does the most for God's dependents.

There was no conscious decision to finish and publish this work on September 11th, but the timing highlights that an understanding of the Prophet is lacking not only in the West but also in many parts of Muslim world, where his message is used to justify acts of violence, oppression, and hatred.

Namaste

The word "namaste" has been explained to me many different ways over the years, but the definition that I like the best - which digs deeply into both the etymology and historical context of the word is "The Highest in me recognizes the Highest in you."
